San Yu's "Chrysanthemums and Butterflies (No. 120)" is an oil painting depicting still life. The artwork portrays the bottom of a flower pot, branches, and details of flowers and leaves. Calligraphic golden lines or lines of the same color are used to outline certain parts, creating a three-dimensional and varied color effect. The painting incorporates the concept of blank space from traditional landscape paintings, presenting a simple composition. The background is in red, with yellow as the tabletop. Different shades of red in the background suggest traces of previous paintings, consistent with San Yu's tendency to paint repeatedly on the same canvas. Golden chrysanthemums, along with varying shades of yellow leaves, veins, and branches, are planted in a blue-bordered porcelain flower pot. Above and on the side of the pot, golden and purplish-black butterflies flutter, creating a sense of depth through subtle variations in color and shading. This painting showcases San Yu's mastery of the flat brushstroke technique, a high-level approach to oil painting. The flowing calligraphic lines, reminiscent of traditional Chinese ink painting, merge with the concise and intense features of Western Fauvism, resulting in a unique and highly recognizable painting style. The artwork displays San Yu's free-spirited personality, with powerful and non-repetitive lines. Even after applying a flat color, he avoids re-drawing the lines, maintaining a distinctive three-dimensional quality to the chrysanthemums and leaves. The canvas used in this artwork contains cotton and linen, typical of canvases used in Europe and America in the 1950s. The canvas shows signs of aging, including mildew stains and traces of oil paint penetration over time. Due to the poor early preservation environment, the canvas has lost its flexibility and has become brittle. San Yu typically used linseed oil for mixing colors, which tends to become sticky over time. As a result, this artwork exhibits some oxidation. In the lower right corner, there is a painted "" character seal, as well as the Romanized "SANYU," which are San Yu's commonly used signatures for his oil paintings. This painting is considered a standard and authentic masterpiece by San Yu.
