The Buddha head features slightly plump cheeks and smooth, rounded contours, resembling an oval face. The expression is serene and tranquil. The eyes have double eyelids with "lying silkworm" (a type of double-folded eyelid) features. Above the center of the eyes, there is a carved white dot. The earlobes droop down past the jawline in a round and flat shape, and they are fully rounded in form. The overall profile of the head forms a curved arc, with a tall and prominent topknot, which aligns with the characteristics of Buddha heads from the Northern Song period.
The headdress has a wide, rounded arc shape, adorned with images of Buddhas, curling leaves, and wubaluhua (a decorative motif). The central Buddha figure on the headdress is depicted with a bare chest and a U-shaped neckline, consistent with the features and decorations of Buddha heads from the Northern Song period. Unlike the narrow and flat headdresses of the Northern Qi period, this headdress is broader. This piece is primarily colored with red, overlaid with blue, black, and purple hues, and finally embellished with gold leaf. This coloring technique is in line with the characteristics of the Dazu Rock Carvings. However, due to the passage of time, the colors have faded, and the gold leaf has been stolen. The small mouth of the Buddha head has a subtle, pursed appearance, with taut and full lines that deviate from the warm and gentle aesthetic of the Northern Qi era.
This Buddha head is carved from gray-red sandstone, with the interior made of red sandstone. The exterior has weathered to a grayish hue due to its age, and the stone is coarse with large pores. The surface of the Buddha head and the headdress shows significant earth infiltration, weathering, calcification, and color loss.
