The Buddha head features a black-colored high topknot, with a central depiction of Amitabha Buddha flanked by two smaller images of Amitabha Buddha. Amitabha Buddha is shown in the gesture of meditation, seated on a lotus throne adorned with curling vine motifs. The headwear is a one-piece tall crown that extends directly upward, almost entirely covering the topknot. This design aligns with the characteristics of Buddha headwear from the Song Dynasty. The facial structure of the Buddha head is oval-shaped, with elongated, slender eyes, slightly downturned at the outer corners, subtly pursed red lips, a plump face, and earlobes that are almost level with the lower jaw. These features align with the characteristic traits of Buddha images from the Song Dynasty.
Similar to other large wooden carved Buddha images, this piece was likely crafted in segments before being assembled, evidenced by traces of glutinous rice glue at the bottom of the Buddha head, indicating the junction with the body. These glue traces have weathered over time. Once the wooden core of the piece was carved, the face was covered with beige lacquer as a base, followed by coloring the head's hair, lips, and white hair tufts with black and red pigments. The crown was painted using red and green colors. Eyebrows were recolored in modern times.
Crafted from wild agarwood. In terms of proportion, if the Bodhisattva were in a seated posture, the body would measure approximately 210 centimeters, and if in a standing posture, around 320 centimeters. It stands as a precious artifact of Buddhist heritage.
