The body of the elephant and the candle holder on its back were crafted separately and then attached using clay. The decorative elements on the elephant's body were also applied using an appliqué technique, and the piece was finished with a thick layer of glaze. The elephant's head is facing forward, its trunk hangs down to the ground, and its face and back are adorned with ornamental decorations. These are complemented by flower-shaped appliqués, circular pendants, and tassels. On the elephant's back, there is a candle holder with six seats. The body of the elephant is hollow, and its four legs stand on a rectangular base adorned with a lotus petal motif.
The body of this piece is made from pale yellow clay from Gao Ling, displaying a coarse texture with natural impurities. After shaping, a layer of makeup clay was applied, followed by a coating of white glaze. The elephant's body was then brushed with a blue glaze as a base, while the candle holder and base were coated with a yellow-brown glaze. Yellow-brown and green glazes were used to embellish the decorative elements on the candle holder, tail, elephant body, and the lotus petal motifs on the base. The piece was then fired in a kiln at around 800 degrees Celsius. Due to variations in glaze thickness and the order of applying glaze, there are dripping and dispersion effects visible.
The glaze imparts a natural iridescent luster similar to mother-of-pearl. The openwork patterns exhibit age-related fine crack patterns and signs of the passage of time, bearing ample traces of clay infiltration. The base also shows some signs of weathering.
