It features various intricate designs with exquisite craftsmanship. The vase showcases a distinct style, different from the ethnic characteristics of the Song dynasty, exhibiting a more bold and innovative form. It has a small mouth, rounded shoulders, and a tapering body, demonstrating an elegant and lively linear style. The delicate bud-shaped lid complements the overall aesthetics.
The lid of the bud-shaped cover is adorned with iron red scrolling motifs, while the main body features a blue and white lotus petal pattern, separated by iron red clouds. The shoulders are embellished with blue and white double rings, portraying a phoenix with distinctive features. The phoenix has a rooster's head, eagle-like beak, fine scales, and a unique tail with coiled ends. The surrounding area of the phoenix depicts iron red peony scroll motifs in a gourd-like pattern. The body of the vase is divided into four panels with blue and white ropework patterns. Each panel showcases iron red narrative figures from Yuan dynasty stories, surrounded by iron red scrolling motifs. The base of the vase exhibits blue and white lotus scroll patterns with iron red accents. The overall decorative style and patterns are representative of the Yuan dynasty, executed with remarkable skill.
The iron red glaze is sensitive to firing conditions and atmosphere, potentially resulting in colors like black or gray. In this case, slight remnants of underdeveloped iron red glaze result in crabshell green and apple green hues. This is a characteristic feature of Yuan dynasty iron red glazes. The blue and white pigments are a mix of domestically produced and imported materials, featuring subtle rust spots in shades of yellow-brown and green-brown. Both the blue and white pigments and iron red glaze are integrated into the body, while the transparent glaze has a slight eggshell tint.
The vase is made using a combination of Ma Chang and Gaoling clays, resulting in a coarse texture with impurities. The foot is unglazed with dripped glaze, and the underside displays a 45-degree bevel with characteristic sesame seed-like black-brown spots. The foot and the dripped glaze area exhibit standard "fire-chestnut" marks.
