The vase is characterized by its unaltered condition with at least six connected sections, a flared mouth, slender neck, rounded body, and a circular foot. The inner mouth rim is adorned with a ring of plum blossom motifs, while the main body of the vase is painted with scenes of figures, interspersed with botanical motifs like peculiar rocks, plum blossoms, banana leaves, and bamboo.
The central narrative on the vase portrays a scene involving General Meng Tian interrogating five prisoners. General Meng Tian, donning a dignified expression and armored helmet, sits upright on a chair. Behind him stands a young soldier wearing armor and holding a Song dynasty sword. He holds a flag with the inscription "General Meng Tian" in bold characters. In front of Meng Tian is a warrior with a bow in his right hand and arrows on his waist. His left hand points toward a messenger approaching with a prisoner. The messenger, donning a short jacket and hat, leads a captive who is kneeling before General Meng Tian, adorned in an ornate robe and tall hat. The attire of these figures diverges from traditional Qin dynasty uniforms, suggesting the influence of Yuan dynasty theatrical costumes. The entire composition showcases the standard artistic style and motifs of the Yuan dynasty, characterized by meticulous craftsmanship.
Iron red glaze is sensitive to firing conditions and atmosphere, potentially resulting in colors like black or gray. In this case, slight remnants of underdeveloped iron red glaze result in crabshell green and apple green hues, which are characteristic of Yuan dynasty iron red glazes. The blue and white pigments are a mix of domestically produced and imported materials, with a higher proportion of domestically sourced materials. The blue pigment has low iron and high manganese content, giving it a slight blue-purple hue, with subtle yellow-brown and green-brown rust spots on the edges. Both the blue and white pigments and iron red glaze are integrated into the body, while the transparent glaze has a slight eggshell tint.
The vase is made using a combination of Ma Chang and Gaoling clays, resulting in a coarse texture with impurities. The foot is unglazed with dripped glaze, and the underside displays a 45-degree bevel with characteristic sesame seed-like black-brown spots. The foot and the dripped glaze area exhibit standard "fire-chestnut" marks.
