The design, glazing and firing, hardness control, inlaying, and polishing of ceramic filigree enamel is far more difficult than that for copper, and represent the highest craftsmanship in China’s colored ceramic wear. This is the best works of the official kiln. To produce this item, plain white ceramic is produced and fired in Jingdezhen and then sent to the court, where it is finished by the court painters. Ceramic filigree enamel pieces are strictly for royal court use, and not given out. Thus, this type of item is rare.
This particular item was hand thrown, detailed, and applied with a transparent glaze (with a slight blue sheen) on the bottom. The bottom of the interior is slightly convex. Blue glaze and sapphire-colored ruyi patterns are used on the outer edge of the plate. The mouth of the plate flares slightly outward. The middle section of the plate has a pair of blue and green dragons, and the background is of red enamel. Filigree cloud and flam patterns can also be seen. The center of the plate is a five-clawed cloud dragon that has wide open eyes, eyebrows, and long whiskers. The dragon appears to be older and resembles Emperor Qianlong during the middle of his reign. This dragon is also similar to the dragon sewn on Qianlong’s robe during the middle of his reign. The background behind the cloud dragon is produced with sapphire-blue enamel, and filigree cloud and fiery dragon ball can be seen.
Copper filigree is used to fix the patterns on the ceramic, and the patterns are filled with thick, opaque enamel coloring, which is then fired numerous times and polished. Magnification of the enamel coloring shows impurities and spots, which are produced by low temperature firing. The enamel colorings and patterns are all commonly seen colors and patterns used in the Qianlong court. This item has a warm and smooth texture similar to that of jade.

Standard kaolin clay with some slight impurities can be seen where the clay body is exposed. The six character inscription (大清乾隆年製) at the bottom of the plate was done with domestically produce ink. The blue ink that has penetrated slightly into the clay is of a type used during the middle period of the Qianlong reign. The top horizontal stroke of the “年”character is broken in the middle. The “刂” at the top right of the “製” character is done with two strokes and the short vertical stroke at the top of the “衣” is at placed in the middle and right of the “制.”
